Today I Walked in Washington

Day 31:

Today I felt Washington’s Pasayten Wilderness.

Pine covered slopes

blanketed with needles.

A slick, slick duvet of needles several inches thick. Sage and low buckwheat dare sit their light faces at the table

Shale ledges clink under my moving feet.  A stray stone crashes hundreds of feet down with the slightest slip. Delicate ravines  fill with pinecones gathered like Star Trek tribbles, numerous and cute. Weathered stumps appear over the hill like rhinos or albatross, strange mythical creatures from within the planet and beyond this planet.

Confident cinnamon spines hold the near vertical slopes in place.

This is home.
